Now indeed he was in possession not merely of an agnostic philosophy, but of a theory of society which was capable of legitimating an attitude to doctrinal religion which his contemporaries would have regarded as subversive of all social order. What he was to go on to develop in the Pensieri sulla religione were two arguments which would serve to give direction and coherence to any attack upon the institutions and doctrines of the Church: an account of the relative merits of different religions, from deism to paganism, and an account of why Christianity was particularly threatening to the state.
But the state is embodied in the person of the ruler. The ruler stands in the place of God; obedience to him is a preparation for obedience to the Ruler of Rulers. Rebellion is equivalent to idolatry. Rulers, moreover, are held to be in a direct relationship to God, and have no need of a religion or a Church to mediate between them and Him. For the text of 1599, on the other hand, the state is embodied in the magistrate. The book is written as an appeal to the noblesse de robe. First the sick man's conviction must be undermined by attacks on the principles which underlie them and some of the particular conclusions which are drawn from them. The purpose of this is to render the mind receptive to new ideas. Second, the false beliefs which are being attacked must be counterbalanced by an opposing, equally false, set of beliefs. Just as in medicine health comes from the balance of contrasting humours, so intellectual health can be reached by balancing contrasting opinions.
