A few days a week, I would have my neighbor come over to watch Jenny while I took our energetic dog for a run. By age two, when Jenny saw me get out the dog’s leash, she would fuss, recognizing that I would be leaving soon for a while. Jenny was cute as a button—curly blond hair, blue eyes, and an adorable miniature body that didn’t work for dink. At two and a half, she began to say single words.
