A typical sigmoidal curve describing reaction rate as a function of substrate concentration is presented in Fig. 1-11. Binding of an effector to the regulatory center alters the reaction rate very efficiently and subtly and is often used in nature to divert the metabolic flow into different directions at branching points. Such a response is important for living systems, but rarely will be seen with enzymes employed in organic synthesis.
