For example, Bickman (1974) investigated obedience by arranging for male experimenters to dress as either a milkman, a guard, or in a sports jacket and tie.

Guidelines are necessary to clarify the conditions under which psychological research is acceptable. The opening paragraphs set the scene for the principles and guidelines and note that although psychologists might be interested in all aspects of human behaviour and experience, there may be some that are off limits because of ethical considerations.
