Neither of these jobs have specifically involved the use of Gaelic, which may also be why, in comparison to Nana, Isabel evidences a relatively low use of Gaelic, as her professional life has been more English language-centred than Nana’s. Also in comparison to Nana, Isabel does not appear to maintain as close relationships with her cousins on Harris as Nana does, presumably because the cousins are more Nana’s age than Isabel’s, which may have made a difference when they were children. This also means that Isabel’s daily life appears less Gaelic-centred than Nana’s, as Nana’s frequent phone calls to her Harris cousins account for a large part of Nana’s daily Gaelic use.

However, by this time my own familiarity with the family and their language use, as well as the fact that I had been present in the interactions, meant that I was able to solve most of the transcription issues on my own rather than having Nana check through the transcriptions. In places of uncertainty, I have asked Nana to check the transcriptions, most recently during a visit in March 2015. Throughout the transcription process, Stuart and I met and communicated regularly about any issues that arose.

No description could be truer of anything than it is of Nana’s house. Two of Nana’s siblings and also Nana’s three children live within a 20-minute drive of Nana’s house. Their house is located approximately 100 metres behind Nana’s own house, which means that the grandchildren have the freedom to move between both houses.
