Levy and Pitt-Rivers soon reached an agreement about how their collaboration would proceed: Pitt-Rivers would secure a publisher for the manuscript he had been working on already and Levy would write an extended ‘prefatory letter’ to accompany it. 41 Levy believed that his letter would not only help Pitt-Rivers avoid criticism of his anti-Semitic views but also, bizarrely, be beneficial to the Jewish community itself.
