First, she feels complimented by Darcy’s love, and is sorry for him, but then she says that she cannot feel any pity for him at all. Is Elizabeth, for some reason, not telling Darcy the truth about her feelings? I shall look closely at this short passage to find out exactly how her complex feelings and behaviour work. Second, when Darcy leaves, Elizabeth sits down and cries for half an hour. This is puzzling because it does not match other parts of the novel. The tiger is ‘burning’ and lives ‘in the forest of the night’; its eyes have burning ‘fires’, its heart is made of twisted ‘sinews’, and its brain was beaten into shape on an ‘anvil’ after heating in a ‘furnace’. This is the emphasis on power, fear and violence I found in Step 2. Its effect is to make the Creator’s power too great to be expressed. All the poet can do is vainly ask questions: if the tiger’s power is terrifying, even more terrifying must be the power of God who made the tiger. So I have found an answer to my question: Blake emphasises the tiger’s power as a way of conveying a sense of the infinite power of God.

You read ‘fearful symmetry’: an impressive phrase, but what does it mean? Think of the poem as a crisis from an unwritten story, and start by finding out about the situation, using our three initial questions. In what circumstances was the poem written? ‘The Tyger’ does not tell us where the poet is or what has happened before the poem. All we know is that, either in reality or in imagination, the poet is looking at a tiger. To whom is the poem addressed? Blake begins with ‘Tyger Tyger’ and says ‘thy’ symmetry, brain, eyes and so on.
