Indentation, when used as a mechanical testing method, can be defined as a general method to measure the mechanical properties of materials by inducing a notch or recess in the tested object and then analysing the force–deformation relationship.
More advanced models have been developed to better describe the nonlinear viscoelastic properties of soft tissue. These models are based on the constitutive equations of materials, and related experiment can be conducted to extract the model p arameters (Fung 1993a). For example, two commonly used models, namely the hyperelastic model (Miller and Chinzei 1997; Miller-Young et al. 2002) and the quasilinear viscoelastic (QLV) model (Fung 1993a; Ledoux and Blevins 2007; Pai and Ledoux 2011), have been used to predict the nonlinear viscoelastic behaviour of soft tissues in testing.
