Traditional cultures value harmony, solidarity, interdependence, honour, and the maintaining of face, hierarchy and status differentials, whereas urban Western cultures value individualism, autonomy, independence, self-reliance, self-esteem, quality, and egalitarianism (Ausburger, 1992: 32). Baruch Bush and Folger’s (2005) transformative mediation sets itself against the Western urban ideology of individualism. Underlying the ideology of transformative mediation is the notion that there is, ‘an inherent supply of the capacity for strength and connection in human beings, rather than an inherent deficit’ (Baruch Bush and Folger, 2005: 250) so that a codified system of law is not necessary for conflict to move in a productive rather than destructive direction.
