Children have a tendency to be intolerant of individual differences, particularly as they grow older, and the school must play its part in educating children out of these narrow and divisive attitudes. One way in which this education takes place is through example. If the school staff are seen to value each child equally, irrespective of race, and seen to be sensitive towards the particular problems faced by individuals from minority groups, then many children will take their cue accordingly, as they will from the respect which teachers show towards the beliefs and customs of these groups, even where these involve changes in school routines.
