I loved the Army, especially the life of being a soldier. The opportunities for personal growth, leadership, discipline, and camaraderie were very meaningful. But I was not passionate about it. It was just fun for me, but that was not enough. What I was passionate about was manufacturing. I could not read enough. I had actually taken several sets of engine installation documents that were usually thrown away from three different marine engine brands and studied them over and over while in the Army.
The mold maintenance department was a four-walled room creating an area to hold all the molds and do necessary maintenance and repair. The walls were concrete block, and at one end of the department there was about a two-inch hole that had been drilled or wallowed out. You could peek through and see production workers in another department. Usually, this hole was full of dust, and also contained a cavalcade of Popsicle® sticks used for patch paste, screws, fasteners, and other miscellaneous debris that factory workers would stuff into the hole for unknown reasons.
The other behavior that was in place was that the first thing that everyone did upon receiving any component or sub-assembly was to check it for quality. If anything was wrong, they immediately contacted the person creating the defect and that person immediately addressed it. ” During this time as an engine installer, I really began to enjoy the factory and all the fun stuff that went along with it. There were colorful people, and a lot of them. The factory had somewhere around 600 employees and, oh yes, some of them were girls.
