'48 Yet even these services had their bright side, for Ernest heard and sang many German chorales, some of which were actually new to him. Most important, he kept calm and did not irritate the prison authorities, who treated him well and generously excused him from manual labour because he was an accomplished organist.

He was also treated to a week in London with his mother, and the two of them, on a tight budget, walked through much of the great city. '51 He signed the letter 'Dacey,' the affectionate nickname by which he was known to his family. 52 In the summer of 1907, Alexander had to return to Canada to resume his duties at St Enoch's, and taking his two older girls, Dorothy and Jean, with him, he left Winnie, Ernest, and Winifred in Scotland so that Ernest could prepare for entrance to Oxford.
