In particular: 1 Design: given the enormous diversity between organisations and sectors, how is it that software package providers can produce solutions which seemingly meet the needs of vastly different users?

26 The dynamics of software packages There is a complex interplay between these technical and business ‘drivers’ of change, which may be more or less tightly coupled together. Sometimes ‘old’ technologies may simply be represented as meeting new social and economic goals (as when CAPM was reoriented towards Just-In-Time [Webster and Williams 1993]). Significant technical advances and new concepts of the organisational outcomes tend to become more tightly woven together. This is perhaps necessarily so, as vendors target their development activity around their vision of the product’s future – and in so doing provide a compelling business reason for existing customers to upgrade.
