Domain Specificity and the Creativity Crisis Kim (2011)—see also chapter four—synthesized studies published between 1965 and 2005 about the relationship between creativity and intelligence and found through meta-analysis a decline in the TTCT-Figural scores from 1966 to 2008. She argued that these declines indicated a creativity crisis in American education. According to the tests, children have become less creative over the last few decades.
Whatever the strengths or weaknesses of Kim’s claim of a creativity crisis (2011), her conclusions call for a return to educational practices that engage and motivate students in multiple ways of thinking. Furthermore, even assuming that the most severe critics are right about lack of validity for divergent thinking as part of creative work, the educational tools developed for divergent thinking can still be useful.
