Twenty minutes later Ruby Darrow and an unexpected companion took the same walk up the sunlit hill leading to the building where her husband was about to be tried for bribery. Ruby paused to face a pack of reporters. In answer to their shouted questions she attempted a smile and insisted that “I shall attend court constantly with my husband. I believe it may help him to know that I am here. ” The Los Angeles Herald confirmed innocently that Ruby was accompanied by “Miss Mary Field of San Francisco, who is making a stay in this city and spends most of her time with Mrs.
