Some pop performers play and sing songs entirely in one of the sub-genres. There are others whose repertoires and styles include songs from several sub-genres. These singers and groups, the generalists of pop, are as many as the performers in anyone of the genres. They include the singers Titlek Puspa, Melky Goeslaw, Bob Tutupoli and Broery Pesulima, and the group Bimbo. Pop ringin (light pop) is a category of songs with lyrics, melodies and rhythms relatively easy to comprehend, and so received by people from all educational levels of society.
I will concentrate on the newer forms, and will explore a set of categories for this new music that was suggested to me by an Indonesian student in Surakarta, Central Java. This set is not absolute; it is meant to be flexible and able to be revised. But I think it is a good place to start in understanding the great variety of forms of contemporary Indonesian musics. At least it is better than the system which proposes two general categories, traditional and modern. It is also more appropriate to Java than a system which divides music into the categories traditional and popular.
Ebiet's music, mostly songs written and sung by him, accompanying himself on the guitar, achieved the most widespread following, displacing Guruh's music as the most popular of pop (Tempo, 8 March 1980, pp. 42-5). -nerican commercial folk and folk-rock, and various types of 1960s and 1970s American country and western music. From these areas of American music, the most influential musicians seem to have been Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and John Denver . Yet Indonesian pop country musicians also perform music which has close stylistic connections to one or more kinds of western rock, and often pieces which have strong country or folk ingredients also reflect the influences of rock and easy listening music from the west.
